Wynand

Wynand | Nova Scotia

For locals, Wynand van Niekerk's sketches capture the city corners they already know and love. For visitors, they become a lasting piece of a place they once visited. Based in Halifax, Wynand is the artist behind Downtown Sketcher, translating the energy and atmosphere of a city into vibrant, hand-drawn art.

Peggy’s Cove

Peggy’s Cove

Peggy’s Cove is a perfect blend of rugged beauty and rustic village life. Here, granite rocks and crashing waves meet a tiny working harbour, where nets and traps tell the story of generations who have lived by the sea. In this sketch, I wanted to capture that timeless character and the gentle calm that settles in when you stand still and let the salt air and the sounds of the village wash over you.

The Public Gardens

The Public Gardens

The Halifax Public Gardens is one of my favourite escapes, it’s a peaceful Victorian sanctuary where history, nature, and community meet. Through its winding paths and reflective ponds, this sketch captures the quiet sense of home found in the heart of the city. It is a tribute to the timeless charm that persists even amidst the bustle of downtown.

Mon Montréal

Mon Montréal

With Mon Montréal, I wanted to capture the specific energy that makes the city come alive, from the rhythm of my bike rides to the iconic silhouette of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. By blending colourful neighbourhoods with the quiet sanctuary of green parks, this illustration translates the spirit of the city into a bold, visual joy. It is my tribute to the poetry of everyday life, celebrating the vibrant pulse and simple magic found in a city close to my heart.

Brilliance Beyond the Horizon

Brilliance Beyond the Horizon

When I think of my home in Nunavut and my people, I think of brightness. This is a snapshot of the nuna (land) outside my window, but home is more than a location, it is a relationship. While many only see the snow, I want to show you what lies past the horizon. In the light of the sunrise, there is the brilliance of my people rooted in cultural strength, intergenerational love, and their happiness. I feel the magic in the air the moment I step off the plane. My home is full of bright futures and every time I look out my window, I wonder what the future’s light will shine on next.

Tuktuliaq

Tuktuliaq

Hunting is our life and it is necessary. I am at my happiest on the nuna (land), and this landscape captures one of my proudest moments: the quiet just before catching my first tuktu (caribou)! In the early fall, the tundra is a gorgeous tapestry of reds, yellows, and greens. Because of my identity as a non-binary person with a Kichwa father, I wasn’t always sure I would have the opportunity to contribute to my community in this way. Being able to participate in these traditions makes me feel most like myself. To me, home is the process after the catch: the giving, the responsibility, and the deepening of relationships.

A Love Letter to Hamilton

A Love Letter to Hamilton

This piece is my love letter to Hamilton, a city where grit, beauty, and creativity coexist. By blending the iconic architecture of James Street North with the raw power of Webster’s Falls, I am capturing the duality of living in a place shaped by both industry and nature. As an artist rooted here, I see Hamilton as a reflection of my own work: layered, evolving, and endlessly inspiring.

The Warmest Magic

The Warmest Magic

This piece was inspired by the clarity of starry winter nights. Growing up, I spent much of my childhood building a winter cabin at a local ski resort with my family. This work blends those early memories of winter adventures with my parents with more recent ones, like travelling to Yellowknife with my father to witness the Northern Lights. It serves as a reminder that even in the coldest depths of a Canadian winter, you can find the warmest magic.

The Rhythm of the Rain

The Rhythm of the Rain

On the coast, the rain is constant, but to me, it is the coziest feeling of home. No matter the weather, my childhood was spent outdoors: canoeing, visiting salmon hatcheries, and watching bald eagles migrate in for their annual feast. This piece captures the “sloshy” leaves and misty trees that teem with life every autumn. Every year, the return of the rain reminds me just how special this corner of the world truly is.
